The lamp, crafted out of long, thin strips of bamboo, makes use of the material’s fibrous nature. In contrast to its stiff appearance, the lamp is pliant and light, dancing and swirling to the whisper of the breeze.

The lamp is part of the Innovo’s design series “Finding a Future for Traditions” conceived in 2009. The series reconceptualizes traditional culture and handicrafts, giving them a new lease of life in the contemporary world.

Innovo Design is a product design practice located in Hangzhou, China. Their designs have been featured at many international exhibitions, including the Milan Design Week 2011.

Want to own a piece of abstracted nature that is not green nor insect-prone? Then, Bloom, a hanging lamp crafted from the leaves of the magnolia tree by Chinese designer Zhang Junjie, is the perfect accessory for you.

To achieve a white, translucent quality, the exterior cells (epidermis) of the leaves were removed, leaving only its inner tissues (mesophyll). The leaves were then bleached.

Due to the special treatment process, the light diffused through the magnolia leaves is soft and gentle, emitting a soothing glow.

Zhang Junjie is a Chinese product designer with Hangzhou-based firm Innovo Design. His individual works have been exhibited at the Milan Design Week and Dutch Design Week. His designs have also been given international recognition by the Red Dot Award and the iF Design Award.

Cloud x Lamp by Zhao Liping

Imagine a cloud floating through your window and freezing itself into place. Magical? Then you’d love Cloud by Chinese designer Zhao Liping, which functions as both a hanging and standing lamp.

In the design of the lamp, Zhao took inspiration from the poem “Chance” by renowned Chinese poet and writer Xu Zhimo (1897-1931):

I am a cloud in the sky,                                                                                                               That is occasionally projected in your heart.                                                                                     Don’t be surprised,                                                                                                                       Or too elated;                                                                                                                             For I shall vanish in an instant without a trace.[…]

Zhao forwards that the lamp is the concrete manifestation of a cloud lingering in her heart. White, pure, ethereal and playful, the design is a reflection of Xu’s nonchalance on the ephemerality of romantic encounters.

I guess if you can’t stop a lover who’s leaving, the least you can do is to cast in stone cloud his/her impression.
